Logging on the
Olympic Trail
The owner of the land encompassing the furthest loop of the Olympic
Trail, 5 km in length, is considering logging that parcel of land. The
City of Timmins is negotiating on our behalf with the owner to preserve
this prime recreational area. At present we have the understanding that
this ski trail will not be harmed this season and will be available to
us.
We have had our trail there for 25 years and we appreciate the fact that
the owner has allowed us to use this land.
The first 2.5 km of the Olympic trail is on land owned by the City of
Timmins and will continue to be available to us. The inner core
consisting of the Green, Blue, Red and Yellow trails are on land owned
by the Porcupine Ski Runners. The previous owner, Kinross Gold
Corporation, donated this land to our club. The trail to South Porcupine
is owned by Goldcorp and will also continue to be available to us.
If negotiations fail between the City and the landowner, planning will
be undertaken to replace this section of trail on secured property.
