 Nordic Centre Project

Architect’s Drawing of the new Chalet Building

Porcupine Ski Runners, a cross-country ski and snowshoe club, is a non-profit organization operated totally by volunteers. Established in January 1973, the club has grown through the years both in the extent of its trails (now 30 km) and in its membership (1,271 last year).

The objective of the Nordic Centre Fundraising Campaign is more than just replacing the present ski shack. An enlarged septic system is needed to complement the enhanced features of the Nordic Centre and improvements to the entrance road from the highway are needed for safety.

The new building with meeting space for at least 150 people will allow us to properly accommodate the large groups that now regularly use the building. In addition to the open meeting space, it will feature kitchen facilities, washrooms, ski storage lockers, change rooms, an office, mechanical room with janitor’s quarters and storage space.

The 1.4 million dollar project is being supported by the Provincial Government, the City of Timmins and the Federal Government. The club and its members are providing a significant portion of the funding. To complete the project, Porcupine Ski Runners needs a final contribution from businesses and citizens of Timmins.

Your Donations Will Benefit Timmins The presence of a dynamic winter Nordic Centre enhances the quality of life enjoyed by many citizens of Timmins - not only members of Porcupine Ski Runners but also the school children and community groups that use the facility.  Some of the benefits are outlined below

Health and Fitness

  • Welcomes all age groups
  • Encourages competition
  • Adapts to individual needs
  • Provides stress relief
  • Involves school programs
  • Promotes cardiac rehabilitation
Recreation

  • Attractive for families
  • Lighted trails
  • Available 13 hours a day
  • Accessible – in town facility
  • Ecofriendly
  • Skills fairly easy to learn
  • Attractive to young active adults and business people

One of the great natural assets of Timmins is the fact we have four to five months of snow.  Our club is in a great position to promote winter sports to the province and beyond.  Each winter we have demands for use of club facilities from outside groups.  Many, at the present time, we cannot meet.

Each year we receive more requests from organizations outside Timmins to use our trails. This winter season we have had requests from the Provincial Biathlon team and two different American universities wanting to bring their entire cross country teams to Timmins for early training. In December, PSR was to host Ontario Cup Races #1 and the Canada Winter Games selection races that would have brought over 200 competitors and support teams to Timmins. In January, PSR was contacted by a travel organization called Voyager Quest who wanted to bring a group of 12 CEOs to Timmins for a corporate team-building exercise involving cross-country skiing, a dog team demonstration and snowshoeing

The potential for Timmins to benefit from tourism will be increased when Porcupine Ski Runners can advertise its new facility as an early season training centre and an excellent venue to host competitions and for recreational skiing and snowshoeing.
