Racer Medal Update
January 2009
Hard work has paid off for two former
members of the Porcupine Ski Runners Race Team. Ghislain de Laplante
from Iroquois Falls and Mallory Deyne from Timmins have both qualified
for international competition.
Ghislain de Laplante recently competed at the World Junior Trials in
Canmore, Alberta. Ghislain competed against 55 other elite Canadian
skiers aged 18 and 19 years old in the junior men’s category. In the 15
km skate race (also called freestyle), Ghislain placed third in a time
of 39 minutes. The following day, he placed fifth in the 20 km pursuit;
a 10 km classic race followed by a 10 km skate race, changing equipment
on the fly like in a triathlon. His combined time was 59 minutes. These
results placed him third overall in the distance events giving him a
berth in the under 20 World Nordic Skiing Championships. The top five
athletes of this age category will represent Canada in Praz de Lys,
France from February 3rd to Feb 6th, 2009.
Félicitations et bonne chance Ghislain! Nous sommes fiers de toi!
Ghislain began competing at the age of 12 in cadet biathlon. He won the
Canadian Cadet biathlon championships at the age of 15. He then joined
the Porcupine Ski Runners junior racing team and earned numerous medals
at the Ontario Cup races in Nordic skiing. He is currently a student at
Lakehead Univesity undertaking studies in geology and skiing with the
Big Thunder ski team. Ghislain is the third local skier to compete at
the World Junior Championships.
Mallory Deyne has been competing in Intercollegiate cross country skiing
competitions as a member of the Lakehead University Team for 4 years and
has qualified for the 24th World University Games in Harbin, China.
The 11-day multi winter sport event is scheduled to take place from
February 18th to 28th, 2009. The Universiade is a multi-sport event that
takes place every two years in various cities all over
the world. It is one of the largest sporting events worldwide, second
only in size to the Olympic
Games. The 24th Universiade in Harbin will feature over 80 sporting
events.
Mallory has won Canadian Championship medals and Ontario Cup medals as a
junior racing for the Ski Runners and she is a dedicated and persevering
athlete.
The Porcupine Ski Runners club wish these two fine athletes the best
possible performances.
